Dining room chairs are automatically part of most dining room furniture sets for sale. Dining chairs are used as seating at a dining table. They come in different designs. Those that come with arms are called armchairs and those without arms are called side chairs. Formal dining room chairs are available fully upholstered, partially upholstered and some come without upholstery. Some of the common chairs you’ll find include parsons, ladder-back, Chippendale, Windsor, and bergere.

Styles of formal dining room chairs

Formal dining room chairs come in different styles. Here are short descriptions for some of the most common styles you will encounter when shopping. A parsons dining room chair has a straight and smooth back. A French-style arm or side chair is called a bergere. It has a wooden outer frame with an upholstered seat and an upholstered or cane back. Chippendale on the other hand is upholstered with a carved wooden back. It features a curvy design which sets it apart from other seat designs. Ladder-back chairs have an upholstered seat. The back has a unique design because of the horizontal wooden slats. If you see a curved back with round horizontal dowels extending from the seat to a solid, that’s a Windsor chair. It has curved wood pieces at the top of the chair.

Formal Dining Room Furniture

You will find dining room chairs for sale that are either fully upholstered or non-upholstered. There are styles that are also partially upholstered. A fully upholstered chair has a seat and back that are padded and covered with leather or fabric. A partially upholstered chair has fabric or leather on only the back or the seat. When choosing upholstery for your dining room chairs, make sure you select a material that is durable and stain-resistant. This way, it can endure most of the food and drink spills over the years.

Non-upholstered dining room chairs seem less formal when you take into account the overall appearance. These chairs may be made of wood, metal, plastic or cane. Common wood types used for these types of chairs include cherry, mahogany, alder, and walnut. While non-upholstered dining room chairs are considered to be more durable than upholstered ones, most people find them less comfortable. There are pros and cons to both styles so it’s up to the homeowners as to what to choose.

In terms of arms, a formal dining room set usually takes up a large space. A rectangular dining table usually uses two armchairs at the head and foot of the table and use side chairs on the long sides. If you’re going for a formal atmosphere, having uniformed chairs works best. Side chairs take up less space than arm chairs but may look less formal.

Things to consider when buying formal dining room chairs

Formal dining room chairs should match the height of the table. The seat height should be 10 to 12 inches less than the height of the table to make a comfortable dining area. Most formal dining room furniture however comes in sets so it’s rare that you find a formal dining table without partner seats.
